I {Heart} Faces: Week 19

This weeks contest at www.iheartfaces.com is a Blurb Book Photo Contest! You can enter your best pic and if you're lucky, they might put it in their Blurb book :)

Here is my entry in the beginner/amateur category. This is a pic of my niece Allie, taken two years ago. I adore this pic, because it captures her perfectly. Shockingly, even though I had no clue how to use my camera or what the heck I was doing, (and here's a shocker, I still don't...lol), this crop is SOOC. I did play with it a little using a few of the actions at MCP Actions (like Eye Doctor & Dentist, Magic Powder, High Definition Sharpening, to name a few) and I really like the outcome. But I SO wish I knew how to use my camera. It's a Canon Rebel EOS SLR XT. Hell, I don't even know if I wrote out the name of it correctly. The most frustrating thing to me right now (besides my 9 month olds sleep habits) is the fact that I have this awesome camera, and yet I have no clue in the world what to do with it. Some can read manuals and figure everything out - not me. I'm more of a "get in there and get your hands dirty" kinda gal, but even after trying, it seems I'm still left walking around with a huge question mark hanging over my head each time I press the button and hear *click* on my camera. If anyone knows about a "Canon SLR for Dummies" type of tutorial, please point me in the right direction!!! lol...

Do I think it's the very best picture I've ever taken? I'm not sure... I just know I love the pic and the person in it :)

Go on over to I {Heart} Faces yourself to see a gagillion more great images in both the amateur and professional categories!

Love your post! Really cute photo too. I also shoot sooc, because, well... I don't really know photoshop ;) I have Elements, but haven't really taken the time to learn, but there is always tomorrow, right?

I think it's a great shot - I'm forever trying to figure out how to get my kids' brown eyes sparkle like yours. I have a Nikon D40 and am stuck on auto settings. Just like you - like to jump in. There is plenty of good sites out there though...almost too much.

I was just going to comment on the photo, but had to read the story, too. I love what you did to the photo - It's a great shot and you did great with the eyes and other things. I have been reluctant to really use those actions, but will have to give it another try. I love your bargain day! My sister and I just drove an hour to another town that was having 40 sales! She does 'funky junk' creations and found lots of great bargains. I do quilting and found an older lady who can't quilt anymore and had all of her fabric in nice color-coordianted ziploc bags - was a great bargain for me! Then I went to one where I bought a print/paining just because I like the colors and style and then took it home did my 'research'. I paid $16 with the frame and when I researched it, turns out he is a famous artist (William S. Schwartz). He is from Russia and went to the Chicago Art Institute and I found places where his oil paintings (mine is either water color or a print of an oil painting) sold for up to $33,000! I don't know where to go from there - some of his watercolors go for $330 to $1,500. I think I will get it re-framed and keep it. My sister and I both filled our vehicles to the brim! Anyway, nice photo and great story! Some of my sister's funky junk is at: http://www.junkmarketstyle.com/profile/junkcollector. I just started blogging and found I ♥ Faces by accident and love it! My husband thinks I have abandoned him for my computer and tweeking photos! Wendy

I think you will get better and better the more you take pictures. That said, your picture is really good and I am SO impressed that you used actions. WHAT THE HECK : ). Actions seem so smart to me. I can't use them for the life of me! I love your yard sale deals. I miss yard sales. I haven't been in a while and I miss it : )

Heather can I tell you I haven't enjoyed a post like this on ever. You have a way of writing that is so captures a reader that before I knew it I had read the whole thing. ;o) Great post, I am very new to this posting thing but will learn. Great photo by the way, I just bought myself the Nikon D40X and like you, jumped in and didn't read anything on how to make it work. I just figured out about a month ago that the 3 lines in the middle of the viewfinder if it turned red then that is what is in focus. When I downloaded the photos and noticed that my son was a big blur and the coach waaaaayyyy far away was in focus, I kind of figured it out. Anyway, good luck to you and I will be back to read more. Thanks. Valerie

Sounds like your Belly Monster is about the same age as my Tummy Gremlin :) Loved the post - - seems like garage sale hopping is the way to go for those of us forced-into-frugality-folk.

I love the garage sale story. Awesome. I, like you, am a bit research obsessed and I would have done the same thing when I got home. And the word free just about makes me pee my pants.
